Great Batusi! Designer Dreams Up a Hot Rod for Batman

For over seven decades, Batman, also known as the Caped Crusader and the Dark Knight, has captured the imagination of comic book readers as well as television and cinema viewers in his quest to bring justice Gotham City and keep the streets clean from evil-doers; sometimes in a very comical, tongue-in-cheek fashion (1966 TV Series), other times in a dark and perhaps tragic manner (Dark Knight). One of the coolest things about Batman other than man himself are his high-tech toys and especially his ride, aptly called the Batmobile, of which we've seen many, many iterations over the years, with this writer's personal favorites being the 1966 television model based on the Lincoln Futura Concept and the Tim Burton's live-action film edition. In essence, the Batmobile can be any kind of car, though, that doesn't mean we like everything we see. This one, however, a hot-rod edition of the Batmobile designed by Mark La Frenais, looks pretty cool in our books and we wouldn't mind seeing it make the jump from a computer generated design to a real-life, fire-breathing, V8-powered bat-monster. Glasses-free 3D breakthrough from Seoul University

Giant underwater isopod fasts for 4 years, feels great (VIDEO)Researchers in South Korea have developed new technology that could enable 3D television and cinema to be viewed without glasses. The team, from Seoul National University, created a slatted barrier that is placed on the screen itself and creates the illusion of depth in the viewer’s perception. Previous attempts at making glasses-free 3D TV have made use of a similar technology, but they required the screen to be viewed from a certain angle. The South Korean researchers got around this problem by creating the slat effect using polarisers similar to those that feature in the lenses of 3D glasses. They claim their method uses less projector space and is cheaper than current 3D projection technology.  Source: Advanced TelevisionImage: flickr.com

Dr. Melba Ketchum To Be Interviewed By George Knapp On Coast to Coast AM Tonight

Two and a half years ago, George Knapp sat down with Dr. Melba Ketchum and David Paulides to talk about the Bigfoot DNA project they were working on. Knapp said that in order to peek at Ketchum's research material, he was required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement. For two years, he kept his silence and was not allowed to talk about what he had learned. Last December, Knapp wrote a blog post titled, "I’m dreaming of a Bigfoot Christmas", explaining the dilemma Ketchum would face if she tried to publish her "scientific paper":
The well-meaning Dr. Ketchum naively assumed that the world of science would welcome her data with open arms and open minds. Her initial draft of a scientific paper unwisely referred to the existence of a Bigfoot-like creature, and she was certain the information from her study would receive a fair hearing from the scientific world. My friend the microbiologist gave her the sad-but-true news that no mainstream science journal in the world would ever publish a paper, or allow for an honest peer review, of any paper that mentioned Bigfoot or Sasquatch by name. Unlike my TV prediction, that one proved prescient in the extreme.Tonight (2/17) on Coast to Coast AM, George Knapp will sit down with Ketchum again, probably to discuss the backlash from not only the Bigfoot community, but also the scientific community. Ketchum posted on Facebook this morning: "Will be on Coast to Coast tomorrow night. I have sent documentation to George Knapp as supporting evidence."Source: : Bigfoot-Evidence

UK embracing hi-tech TV

TV-loving UK consumers lead the world in using the latest technology to enhance their viewing experience, Ofcom research has revealed. The UK is ahead of other countries such as Japan and the USA for catching up with TV online and is at the forefront of using new technology such as smart TVs and digital video recorders (DVRs). Ofcom’s report shows that the UK is embracing the latest TV technology, as the country becomes one of the first all-digital nations, following the digital TV switchover which was completed in October. As well as being the leading country for the adoption of digital video recorders, UK consumers are the most likely in the world to access TV content over the Internet. Almost a  quarter  (23 Internet users claimed to do this every week – driven by  per cent) of UK the popularity of online TV catch-up services such as BBC iPlayer, Sky Go and 4OD. The USA ranked second with 17 per cent, with Spain third (16 per cent). The UK also has one of the highest proportions of TV homes with HD – at 41 per cent, higher than France (18 per cent), Germany (28 per cent) and Japan (31 per cent), but behind the US (49 per cent). UK consumers are also embracing the new generation of smart TVs – enabling access to online services such as catch-up TV viewing, social networking and gaming on the TV set. Fifteen per cent of UK consumers say they own a smart TV. This is the same as France, but compares to 10 per cent in the USA. The average UK viewer watches over four hours (242 minutes) of TV every day, with only the USA (293 minutes) and Italy (253 minutes) watching more. Earlier this year, Ofcom revealed that TVs in the UK’s living rooms continue to get bigger. Over a third (35.4 per cent) of TV sets sold in Q1 2012 were either ‘super-large’ (33” to 42”) or ‘jumbo-sized’ (43”+), up from 6.8 per cent in 2005. Source: Advanced TelevisionImage: flickr.com

Microsoft patent reveals whole-room immersion ambitions

A recent Microsoft patent has revealed its ambitions to bring the gaming environment out of the TV and onto the walls of your living room. Patently Apple, which analyses the patent applications of Apple and other technology competitors found the filing from August and has published a detailed overview of the document.
Microsoft apparently plans to use a future version of its Kinect sensor to accurately plot the position of a gamer within a game’s virtual environment and then to allow a games console to project that environment onto the walls of the room. The patent further speculates that both the main display and projected environment could be based on 3D technology to provide an even more immersive experience. Now, whilst this is simply a patent application, not a product plan, the possibilities are pretty exciting. As we’ve already seen its perfectly possible to couple gaming technologies with high resolution imaging systems for some impressive results. It would be perfectly possible to hook a Kinect sensor with a high performance graphics rig to drive a fully immersive cave-style environment. All we need now is solid projected images, and we’ve finally got the holodeck! Source: InAVate

New technology can 'pull' a show on TV onto tablet

New technology can \'pull\' a show on TV onto tablet
Do you hate missing out on your favourite TV show just because you had to rush out of the house? A new technology can now 'pull' the programme on your TV screen onto your tablet so you can watch it on the go! A scientist from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore has developed an innovative multi-screen mobile social television experience called the 'Social Cloud TV'. Wen Yonggang, assistant professor from the School of Computer Engineering has described his invention as the next frontier of television experience as you can now "bring the social experience of watching television in your living room wherever you go". The system allows you to watch TV programmes and online videos with your family and friends at the same time. The system leverages a cloud backend for media processing, such that the same video can be streamed into devices in the most suitable format. When viewing a TV show or perhaps a live soccer match, you can invite family and friends to join your session, from either your phone book or social networking contact lists. "You could watch a video with your class mates on the computer, and just before you leave school, 'pull' the show into your tablet and continue watching on the go," Wen said in a statement. "Upon reaching home, you could just turn on your television and 'throw' the video back to the TV, and continue watching the programme there," Wen added. "With the increase in online video and personal multimedia devices, we have lost out on the experience of watching TV shows together as a family and as a social activity with friends. So I hope that with my invention, people can now reconnect with each other socially using videos," Wen said.Source: Indian Express

The TV of the future arrives early!! TV having Thickness of Just 4mm

OLed TV with Four Color pixel
This week, LG will unveil the first 55-inch OLED television - a technology that offers razor-thin screens, sharper colours and faster-moving screens than any previous television. Organic LED - OLED - is used widely in high-end smartphones such as Samsung's Galaxy S2, but up until now, manufacturing large screens using the technology has been too expensive. The set is just 4mm thick and weighs 7.5kg. It will launch at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. The television updates 1,000 times faster than current LED sets. LG claims to have cracked a new manufacturing process that makes the set far cheaper to produce - although the company has still not said how much the TV will cost. The set has four colours of

pixel, rather than the usual three, which makes for high-contrast, sharp images with realistic colours. ‘We have a product which not only delivers on all the advantages of OLED over LCD but at a significantly lower cost,’ said Havis Kwon,CEO of LG Electronics. ‘OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment.’ Earlier OLED sets - Sony and others have already unveiled smaller sets - tended to have colours that changed depending on what angle viewers looked at the set from.  The new set has an infinite contrast ratio, and the speed - 1,000 times faster than LED sets - ensures it can show extremely fast-moving scenes without motion blur. The Ultimate Update: The TV of the future arrives early!! The Digital Future Of A Hotel Stay

Sam Daily Times: Our modern age is defined by our technology and how it's become a part of our day-to-day lives, yet when traveling hotels have struggled to keep up. Everyone from business travelers to the common vacationer has their life somehow linked to digital technology with iPods, smart phones, tablets, and laptops. Hotels, amazingly, are slow to offer a way for guests to plug-in and integrate with the hotel. Even something as simple as internet access is difficult to get without being charged a princely sum. Amazing because internet access is something that is freely available at coffee shops like Starbucks or even McDonald's now offers free internet access at many of their locations. However, some hotels are beginning to change by providing more ways for guests to plug-in. There may be a day very soon were guests could have a complete stay from making a reservation to ordering room service to receiving their checkout receipt without speaking to a single real person. They can achieve this completely by digital means. There are a couple of reasons for this change of attitude among hotels. One reason is that a hotel or a hotel chain can really stand out in the market by offering new and appealing technologies to their guests. A second reason is that early adopters of technology are an appealing demographic for hotels, not only because of their economic affluence but also their propensity to tell others practically immediately about their stay. A hotel with a significant technological component for the geek-set would be reason enough for them to brag across all social media platforms about their hotel stay.Social media is a great equalizer that both the large chain hotels and the small independently owned bed and breakfast can use. Consider how a guest can put up their own pictures from their smart phones onto Pinterest bragging about their stay. Or another guest tweeting in real-time how they are on Twitter using the hotel room's multiple monitors. Immediate word-of-mouth. An Example at Check-in: Taking concierge service into the digital age a pair of boutique hotels in New York are greeting guests at the door with an iPad carrying greeter. Using the iPad the hotel greeter is able to check-in guests and create room keys either in the lobby or in transit to the room. Not only does this service enable a more friendly and relaxed check-in, it also introduces the guests to the person who will be acting as their concierge for their stay. The greeter/concierge is easily made available by texting. One hotel in Hong Kong is doing away with people altogether. Check-in actually starts when they are picked up at the airport. The shuttle vehicle is equipped with internet access where people can both check-in and checkout without paper and without people. While these are just a few remote examples, they are a snapshot of the future of the hotel stay. An Example of a Room Key: One Las Vegas hotel is differentiating itself by providing keys that operate by using a sensor. While this is not new technology, as people have been "badging-in" at work for years now. The use of sensor keys as an access control to a person's hotel room is a new use of this technology. However, this being Las Vegas, the hotel does do some unique one-upmanship with it. As a person enters a room for the first time using the key, the room will turn on the lights, open the curtains, and turn on the television automatically. The television turns onto a list of controls that the guest can personalize for their stay. Also, the hotel not only offers but brags about its free internet access (or at least included in their room rate) which can be up to eight times faster than the other Vegas hotels. An Example of Entertainment in the Room: An upscale chain hotel in Seoul is providing a way for guests to plug in their equipment to the hotel room's audio and video systems at a single location. Then their video or music files can be controlled through the room's large screen televisions. Even one's laptop can be plugged into the system. This provides the ultimate of personalized entertainment, entertainment that the guest brought with them. A London hotel provides charging stations in the room's walls, but its true differentiator is that it gives guest an iPod 2 to use in the room. Also, the rooms come with 3D Blu-ray systems for the large screen 3D television. Of course, 3D specs are provided in the room for the television. Continuing that theme, the hotel also has a 103 inch 3D screen in the hotel bar with specs available there too. An Example of Things to Do: A hotel in Tokyo realizes that people come to stay in hotels but want activity outside it. Actually, hotels have known this for some time because ever hotel tries to tout its proximity to popular local attractions. So, in the digital age this Tokyo hotel provides walking tours of the surrounding neighborhoods via iPod. It even provides an iPod tour of the hotel's 1000 piece art collection. Should someone not have an iPod, then they can get one provided by the hotel. An Example of Reservations: One major US-based hotel chain is growing its app presence in the smart phone market, like those for the iPhone or Android phones. Their smart phone app lets people check for the closest hotels, availability, and the rates for those available rooms. This helps them gain more regular customers who will use the app for last minute reservations. Last minute reservations are actually growing as people are learning they can check for hotel availability from their digital devices (and often score the best rates for a last minute reservation). The app also helps those last minute users loyal to the chain. Source: Sam Daily Times

Will Apophis asteroid hit Earth?

Will Apophis asteroid hit Earth?
By Natalya Kovalenko, There is a risk that the Apophis asteroid may hit Earth in 2036. If it happens the consequences will be catastrophic because Apophis will bring more destruction than the Tunguska meteorite, which fell on Earth in 1908, Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of the Russian Space Agency says. In 2029, the scientists will know exactly if the asteroid will hit Earth or not. In 2029, the asteroid, which is moving around the Sun, will pass our planet at a relatively close distance of about 30,000 km. Television switch off is the maximum threat for people in this case but when the asteroid enters the Earth gravitational field it may change its trajectory and 7 years later, when it will be moving close to Earth again, the catastrophe could happen, Sergey Naroyenkov, expert on space threats at the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences says. Connected TV sport app from BBC

The BBC has launched its new sport app for connected TVs, enabling audiences to access the BBC’s interactive coverage of major sporting events via the BBC Red Button. This is the BBC’s next generation TV experience, seamlessly integrating linear TV with online and on-demand content at the simple click of a button. Initially focusing on Formula 1, the BBC Sport app will bring all the race action together in one place, with live streams, on-demand video and additional content. During races that are covered live on BBC One, fans won’t miss a second of the race, with access to alternative options such as on-board cameras which take the viewer to the heart of the action and the ‘driver tracker’ that shows where each car is on the circuit. As well as the races themselves, there will be full coverage of practice and qualifying sessions. Over the next few months, the BBC Sport app will also include coverage of Euro 2012, Wimbledon and London 2012 Olympic Games for sports fans across the UK. The BBC Sport app will sit alongside the award-winning BBC News app, which includes the best of BBC News on TV, online, and on-demand along with the BBC iPlayer app for connected TVs. The BBC News and Sport apps both launch immediately on Virgin Media’s TiVo service, bringing BBC Red Button to around 500,000 Virgin Media TiVo homes, for free. The BBC Sport app for connected TVs will be made available on a range of additional devices. Launching BBC Sport on connected TVs is another important step in the BBC’s strategy to bring its content to audiences across four screens: the PC, mobile, tablet and connected TVs. Phil Fearnley, General Manager for News and Knowledge in the BBC’s Future Media division, said the app and Red Button launch would ensure the broadcaster brought its next-generation TV experience to sports fans across the UK, integrating TV and online content seamlessly at the click of a button. “With predictions there’ll be almost 36 million connected TVs installed in UK homes by the end of 2016, the new BBC sport app is a great new way for these audiences to access the best of BBC’s content,” he claimed. The app launch – in the run-up to the first Grand Prix the BBC is covering live in the 2012 Formula One season – follows the launch by Sky of the Sky Sports App for iPad prior to the season opener in Melbourne over the weekend of March 16-18. Source: Advanced TelevisionImage: flickr.com
